The Hidden Bottle

Hidden bottle | The remains of a bottle, top and a note carrying the details of seven young people who were prisoners of the notorious Auschwitz concentration camp are on display in Oswiecim, Poland. The note, written in pencil and dated Sept. 20, 1944, was found rolled up in a glass bottle hidden in a concrete wall by workmen while renovating a cellar — a desperate attempt to preserve a small piece of themselves. The note bears the names, camp numbers and hometowns of the seven prisoners — six from Poland and one from France. ( Jarek Praszkiewicz /AP )
